The 32-year-old, known for his role as a wicketkeeper-batsman, has played four Test matches for his country between 2019 and 2023. Klaasen’s Test career included debuts in India and appearances in Australia, as well as two games against the West Indies.
Recently, he was not selected for the Test series against India, with Kyle Verreynne chosen as wicketkeeper by coach Shukri Conrad. Klaasen’s Test statistics include scoring 104 runs at an average of 13.00 and achieving 10 catches and two stumpings.
In his broader first-class career, he played 85 matches, scoring 5,347 runs at an average of 46.09, with a personal best of 292 runs for the Northern Titans.
Reflecting on his decision, Klaasen expressed that it was a challenging choice, especially as he holds a deep affection for the red-ball format. He acknowledged the on-and-off-field battles that have shaped his cricketing journey.
Klaasen regards his test cap as his most treasured possession and expressed gratitude to those who influenced his red-ball career. He now looks forward to new challenges in other formats of the game.
CSA director of cricket Enoch Nkwe added: “It is tough to see a player of Heinrich’s caliber step away from red-ball cricket, but we respect his decision.
“We look forward to seeing him excel in the white-ball arena and continue to make valuable contributions to South African cricket in the years ahead.”
