AUS vs WI 2nd ODI Preview
Australia (AUS) will be up against West Indies (WI) in the 2nd ODI of the West Indies tour of Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney on February 4. As expected, Australia started the series with a thumping win and would be expected to win this game as well while West Indies might be eyeing for a return.
Both these teams had squared off against each other in the first game of the series which was played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground where Australia won the toss and elected to field. West Indies did not have much to present to the game with the bat. Keacy Carty and Roston Chase stood out with the bat as they both reached their half-centuries each where Carty was unlucky to have been run out on 88 and missed his century. No other batters could contribute significantly and the team managed to score a total of just 231 runs.
Australia, had a very modest chase ahead of them after a fantastic performance with the ball, especially Xavier Bartlett putting up a great show. Head went back to the pavilion in the first over of the innings as he threw his wicket to Forde. However, Josh Inglis and Cameron Green joined hands to stitch together a beautiful partnership worth 79 runs. Skipper Smith joined the party when Inglis left the crease and he too went on to score a fifty after the other two. After such a brilliant display with the bat, Australia easily won the game by eight wickets.
AUS VS WI TEAM PREVIEWS
AUSTRALIA
Australia gave a debut to Xavier Bartlett who made an immediate impact and ended up with four wickets to his name. He has, however, been rested for the second ODI with Josh Hazelwood being named as a replacement. This will only strengthen the bowling attack, with all respect to Bartlett.
Lance Morris, Saean Abbott, and Cameron Green were the other leading bowlers for Australia. It is unclear if Adam Zampa will be available for the next match but even if he does not play, we think Australia’s bowling attack is more than capable of rolling the West Indies over again.
A change at the top of the order will be required now that Travis Head is unavailable for selection. Matthew Short could move up the order or Australia may decide to bring in one of its players on the bench. Jake Fraser McGurk seems like the most likely candidate in that case.
Inglis, Green, and Smith all got runs in the previous match. They also had Labuschagne, Hardie, and Short waiting in the shed. This just shows the kind of depth that Australia has and not having Head available for selection is not going to make any difference.
WEST INDIES
West Indies will be happy to see tha manner in which Keacy Carty played. He top-scored with 88 and paced his inning very well. It is a pity that no one apart from Roston Chase could give him any real support. Both he and Chase managed to get some sort of respectability to the West Indian total but a lot more will be needed in the upcoming matches.
Players like ALick Athanaze, Justin Greaves, and Romario Shepherd will have to step up.
We made the assessment before the first match that while there is undeniable talent and depth in the West Indian lineup, there are not enough players that are outstanding. They lack players that can win them matches single handedly, especially in 50 over cricket, and so we expect them to continue to struggle.
The lack of wickettaking potential in the lineup was also more than clear in the previous match. A couple of wickets in the entire match and not a single period where the run rate was under control. It was all about the Australian batters filling their shoes and scoring freely.
You need an excellent bowling lineup to compete in 50 over cricket against a team like Australia. That is not something that the West Indies has and so we really doubt whether it will be able to push the hosts in this next game either.
Australia vs West Indies 2nd ODI Pitch Report and Conditions
It is expected to be a bit overcast on match day. There is not too much rain forecast right now but we could have some interruptions. The pitch at the SCG is an absolute batting beauty. Both teams will know that something around 300-320 is the least they need to aim for.
AUS vs WI Today Match Weather Report
Mostly cloudy, 29°C (84°F), with a 34 km/hr (21 mph) breeze and moderate humidity (67%)
Australia vs West Indies Toss Prediction
Australia’s preference to bat first at the SCG is no surprise, given their exceptional track record. Opting to bat first has proven fruitful for the hosts, winning 7 out of 7 matches when they won the toss and batted first. In contrast, their only loss at the SCG came when they chose to chase.
